Interview with HAAZE

Canadian metal trio HAAZE is set to drop out a new album "Swamp Mama" in January, and if you are into riff-laden metal heavily rooted in sludge and doom, as well as groove, it's a release to be checked out. Here is an interview I did with guitarist and singer Mitchell Soloway.

Alright, first thing is first. Before we dive into all the music stuff, how's life?

Life is fucking awesome, although I'm tired as shit right now I just worked a 12 hour night shift riding around on train cars.

Speaking of new music, you have an album coming out in January. What can people expect from “Swamp Mama”?

Lots of greasy riffs and dual guttural vocals. It's different that for sure, we aren't quite stoner rock and we aren't really doom 100% either. We really try to just make music we love and however it comes out is what we got, HAAZE doesn't try to force any particular style out, meaning when we write songs we don't come in with the mindset of being like "alright this song needs XYZ," we just get our starting point and run with it.

What was it like working on the album?

Exciting, the album was recorded in two session about 3-4 months apart from one another. When we recorded the first part we actually didn't realize that we would be working on album, we just had some free studio time offered to us and when we utilized it was very apparent that we had a great connection with Ranjit Ranawaya (the producer), and that he was very capable of capturing what we had to offer. 3-4 months later we finished tracking the album and wahla!

Are there any touring plans in support to “Swamp Mama”?

100%. We hope to do all of Canada in 2019 plus a leg of the states. If we are shooting for the stars we get to Europe in late 2019.

While we are on the subject of touring, what countries would you love to tour?

Everywhere, one of the artist we used on our merch is from Indonesia and he is always posting videos of rad shows going on over there!

Who and what inspires you the most?

For me personally just anyone I see giving it there all into anything they truly love. Other people's hustle is jet fuel for me, makes me feel like a slacker sometimes and I gotta step up my game. It's crazy too, sometimes I'll stumble upon stuff that even gets me emotional because of the amount of passion someone puts into their work. I have literally teared up from watching my daughters dance recitals but also from jamming out to stuff anywhere from Beethoven to Gojira.

What other genres of music do you listen to? Have any of the other genres you listen to had any impact on your playing?

Everything and anything that has some soul behind it. You can tell when someone really set out to create something authentic to themselves, right now I have been jamming a lot of KEN Mode but then I go all the way into some G - Eazy & Lorn.

I really appreciate you giving us your time today. Is there anything else you would like to tell us and the fans before we wrap things up?

We are absolutely stoked to share this record with everyone, we have literally been bursting at the seams with excitement to hear peoples feedback and to just have it out there. Thank you so much for listening and supporting not only us but your other favorite artists/bands.

"Swamp Mama" is out January 7, 2019. You can pre-order it here. Follo HAAZE on Instagram.
