Interview with CONFLICT

Russian industrial metal quartet Conflict will remember 2019 by the release of their second album "Decision Code." Singer Anna Hel reflects on the record, writing process, and more.

Alright, first thing is first. Before we dive into all the music stuff, how's life?

Goes good for now, our best plans are always connected to music that keeps us alive.

Speaking of new music, you have an album. What can people expect from “Decision Code”?

The new “Decision Code” is industrial death metal blend spiced with post rock and dark jazz elements with the futuristic atmosphere. All that is supported by a certain conception, and significantly heavier the previous two albums. The conception rises the idea about the human imperfection blinded by fanaticism ready to destroy the humankind. You may also hear many great guest vocalists such as Burton C Bell of Fear Factory, Jayce Lewis, Dave Lowmiller of A Dark Halo, Karsten Jagger of Disbelief that extremely spiced up the album blend.

What was it like working on the album?

We faced great challenge in making of this album. The idea to create a story supported by lyrics and music inspired us and at the same time became a challenge. For me it led to full dive into personage characters and their emotional state, I ran thru unusual experience. Our perfectionism to details caused lots of rework and revision of parts, sounds, synths, including vocals. After each step, the songs became heavier in sound and vocals. Our vast musical tastes turned out into music versatility of musical elements included. And now, a listener may completely immerse thyself into the picture of what is happening in the conceptual story.

Are there any touring plans in support to “Decision Code”?

We have no idea yet, but we are open to any suggestions, would be great to play at the European festivals.

While we are on the subject of touring, what countries would you love to tour?

That would be England, Germany, USA… I would tour the world, and of course, the best place is where people are waiting for our music and us.

Who and what inspires you the most?

Long time ago I was inspired by Angela Gossow (Arch Enemy), with her energy and power to set the world on fire. She lighted a spark in me to be an extreme singer. Besides that, I find inspiration from different music genres, from jazz to death metal. As a lyricist, I love writing about emotional state and its colors, describing nuances in finding the power to live.

What other genres of music do you listen to? Have any of the other genres you listen to had any impact on your playing?

I’m very attracted by opera and jazz voices, the texture and dynamics. We all in the band listen to different styles of music. In general, from old school Swedish metal to dark jazz, grindcore to synthwave (The Haunted, Nine Inch Nails, Fear Factory, Bohren und del Club of Gore, Carbon Based Life Forms and many more) That’s why you may here in Decision Code some post rock influence , dark jazzy elements as saxophone parts…

I really appreciate you giving us your time today. Is there anything else you would like to tell us and the fans before we wrap things up?

Me and Conflict truly appreciate all the help and support you give us so we could keep moving forward! Together we will keep the industrial metal engine working unstoppable!
